At an early age William was taught the didgeridoo by his uncle of the Waanyi and Lardle tribes of North West Queensland and taught many cultural aspects of bush food and didgeridoo making by other tribal elders including William's father Alf Barton.

Now 22 years old, William journeyed back to his home lands to find and make a didgeridoo out in the bush in the Argilla and Selwyn ranges.
